Misalignment occurs in the musculoskeletal system when the bones that make up a joint stop moving properly. The chiropractic term for this is subluxation. Subluxation can happen for many reasons, including trauma and injury, repetitive activities that result in imbalance or overuse in certain regions, hard work or workouts without proper conditioning, and poor posture.
When a joint is misaligned, it can lead to irritation of the nerves and surrounding tissues causing pain, tightness or stiffness, and loss of mobility. It may also affect organ function if those nerves are involved.
Uncorrected misalignments can contribute to chronic pain and long-term conditions, including chronic back and neck pain; headaches; migraines; extremity joint pain; muscle tension; and conditions such as anxiety; insomnia; chronic fatigue, and more.
Chiropractic adjustments are a natural, holistic way of addressing the neuromusculoskeletal issues that occur with misalignment. When the chiropractor delivers a fast, gentle thrust to the part of the joint causing the problem, proper alignment is restored. This reduces inflammation in the surrounding region and removes the strain and pressure that irritate or compress the nerves and interfere with the body’s communication system. Chiropractic adjustments do not treat the symptoms; they treat the root cause, removing blockages in the neurological system and allowing the body’s natural healing process to do its job.
In our office, chiropractic adjustments are frequently paired with exercise and other therapeutic modalities to speed healing, prevent injury, and maintain overall good health. Regular chiropractic visits can help keep the spine properly aligned, preventing pain and injuries before they occur.
Tables with separate segments that can be lifted by levers and set at a specific tension determined by the chiropractor. When the adjustment is delivered, the table "drops," allowing gravity to assist in the adjustments. Less force is needed to deliver these types of adjustments, and it isn't necessary for patients to be placed on their side in uncomfortable or awkward positions in order to receive an adjustment.
A chiropractic adjustment delivers a high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust at a specific angle to a joint in the body that is not moving properly. The light, fast impact in the proper direction frees the "stuck" joint and allows it to resume normal motion. This eliminates irritation and inflammation in the area and removes interference with the nervous system, resulting in reduced pain and improved function.
There are many different chiropractic techniques and types of adjustments, and they all feel different. Some adjustments cause a "popping" sound as gasses are released from the joint, others do not. Most people will find a style of adjusting that works best for them, and that's great. Chiropractic is not a one-size-fits all approach.
